Tithe vs. Offering 1

Over the years, I have counseled hundreds of Christians concerning financial matters, none of which is more misunderstood and misapplied than tithing. Scripture is very clear on tithing and I will attempt to discuss some main points.

In Malachi 3:10, God commands that we are to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. The storehouse was instituted during the time of King Hezekiah (II Chr 31) and is thought to be either special rooms in the Temple or a type of lean-to beside the Temple. Point 1 - The purpose of the storehouse: the people's obedience led to God's tremendous blessings resulting in a surplus that could not be readily consumed, therefore, an expansion project was instituted. Point 2 - The tithe goes to the storehouse (church) for the purpose of supporting those that devote themselves to kingdom work (Num 18: 8-21; II Chr 31:4; I Cor 9:7-14). As a result of today's church environment, many ministries are instituted to expand their reach to the lost. As a Christian, one does not have the right or scriptural mandate to give the tithe to any place other than the church. Anything less is disobedience and falls short of God's standard.
