Tithing: Gross vs. Net

I often get asked, "Do I tithe the gross or net?" I jokingly respond with, "Well that depends. Do you want a gross or net blessing?" All kidding aside, I believe scripture is very clear on the issue. Jesus said in Romans 22 to render to God the things that are God's. There is nothing implied, inferred or assumed that He meant anything else - not Net, not after this deduction, not after that adjustment, not after Caesar gets his share, nothing! There is nothing in scripture, anywhere, that validates any other position.

The tithe comes from the first part (Lev 27:30), not the leftovers; anything less is unscriptural. Many fiercely oppose this statement to justify their actions, as did the rich ruler in Luke 18. I've heard all the arguments, some of which I've used myself, but they're all irrelevant. It only hinders one's spiritual journey by falling short of God's standard. My advice: NEVER consider the Net issue - it's bargaining, negotiating, evil and unGodly. If you're having difficulty working through this, read II Chronicles 25:1-9 and Malachi 3:10.
